Unitec donates 4 houses to local Playcentres

Four New Zealand Playcentre Association's have received a new house donated from Auckland's Unitec Institute of Technology. Te Akoranga (West Auckland), Counties, North Shore and Tamaki Associations met up with Joe Hede Unitec's Manager, Apprenticeship Training Trust, to check them out.

The playhouses were built by ITaB carpentry apprentices competing in the 2012 ITaB Apprenticeship Challenge, to find the top ITaB carpentry apprentice in the country. The successful apprentice from this regional competition went on to represent the Auckland region in Wellington at the national finals, where he achieved third place. These apprentices are currently completing their training at both Unitec and MIT, where the apprentices receive their theoretical components of their training. Unitec also offers apprenticeship training to other areas of the timber based trades such as Furniture-making, Cabinet-making, Timber joinery and Boatbuilding.

Emma Jane Hordyk, Te Akoranga Playcentre Association PR Convenor was impressed with the building standard, she said “It is a great way to support the local community. The playhouses are beautifully built and we hope to work with Unitec in the future to support the students experience and benefit some of our Centres which need a lot of rebuilding.”
