Opportunities Unfold For CELTA Graduate Robin Churchman

Unitec Certificate in English Language Teaching (CELTA) graduate, Robin Churchman will soon take up an English language teaching post at Colombian company, IH Bogota.

It’s quite an achievement for the Laingholm resident, who enrolled in the CELTA course after a friend recommended it to him, and graduated in June, 2011. As a successful graduate, he said he wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the course to others.

“All of the tutors are outstanding, and have encyclopaedic knowledge of the language,” says Robin.

A qualified engineer, Robin has a diverse range of interests which include learning different languages, photography, reading, writing, participating in outdoors activities, and indulging in cooking. Completing the CELTA qualification has helped him turn his interest in languages into a career option.

Robin believes he got the job with this qualification under his belt and ‘a little luck on my side’. He posted his CV online, and was soon approached by both IH Bogota and a Chinese agency for potential jobs.

He accepted the job offer in Colombia, but an unexpected health issue meant he had to postpone his start date until next year. To keep his skills up to date until then, Robin undertook some relief work in Auckland, teaching Chinese elementary students.

Currently Robin is also running his own computer software consultancy but is looking forward to taking up his post at IH Bogota, to teach English in a business context.

Over the years he has done his fair share of travelling abroad, and soon his host of memorable experiences will include a stint living and working in this vibrant South American nation.

Learning to teach English can open up exciting opportunities in New Zealand and around the world.

The CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is an internationally recognised qualification that gives you the skills to become an effective English language teacher.

The Intensive CELTA is a 4-week course and starts 12 November 2012.
