Education renewal in Canterbury
New schools part of greater Christchurch Education Renewal
Christchurch will get new schools and others will be completely rebuilt as part of the $1 billion investment in education renewal in greater Christchurch.
The Secretary for Education, Lesley Longstone, says enhanced provision at Pegasus Town and Rolleston have been confirmed while Halswell School will be rebuilt.
Ms Longstone said: “We are looking to have new and innovative designs for these schools that give learners across greater Christchurch 21st-century learning environments.
“The 10-year renewal plan and investment announced yesterday by Ministers allows us a great opportunity to develop new ways of delivering education for all ages.
“Schools have been informed about the massive investment programme and we will be discussing proposals with communities as they take shape. Over the coming months, the Ministry will be very keen to hear what people have to say.
“The earthquakes changed the built environment across greater Christchurch forever. We are responding to the new environment – one that will continue to change in response to where people are settling and living.”
Ms Longstone said sites and final numbers of any additional new and rebuilt schools could not be confirmed until engagement with the sector is complete and decisions are finalised around the future of some existing schools.
The Ministry will be engaging with the boards of trustees of the existing North Canterbury schools to discuss progressing the future shape of provision at
Pegasus.
There will be consultation with the community in the fourth term of this year on how provision at Rolleston might incorporate some of the innovative provision and building options that have been identified through recent consultation on the draft Education Renewal Recovery Programme.
Consultants will also be engaged to begin design work for Halswell as the first step in project planning with a view to physical works beginning early in 2013.
Notes for editors
Proposals for state primary and intermediate schools can be found on the shaping education website.
Geotechnical information will inform future proposals for secondary provision in Christchurch.
