Palmerston North student wins new design award
Seventeen year old Daniel Voss, a student at Palmerston North Boys’ High School, is the winner of the first Design Distinction Awards for young designers.
The Design Distinction Awards (dDawards) is a joint venture between UCOL, the Eastern Institute of Technology (Hawkes Bay) and the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. Daniel was the Palmerston North winner and the overall winner from the three regions.
As Supreme Award winner he receives a MacBook, return flights to Auckland courtesy of competition sponsor Air New Zealand Grabaseat, $250 worth of accommodation from Jasons Travel and a meet and greet with Young & Shand, a top creative agency in Auckland. He also gets a new iPad as regional winner of the Year 11-13 group.
The competition was held in the three regions over last weekend. It gave participating students just 48 hours to come up
with a creative marketing campaign for Grabaseat. Palmerston North students worked at their schools and at UCOL’s School of Photography, Arts and Design facilities.
Head of School, Rachel Hoskin, says teachers and students from Awatapu, Tararua College and St Peter’s College all came to work at UCOL. “The quality of the students was very high, both creatively and how they conducted themselves over the weekend.” The
schools should be proud of their students.” Some schools opened their facilities for the students to use over the
weekend.
St Peter’s College student Teagan Lewer won the Palmerston North Year 9-10 group.
Rachel says the the winners from the Manawatu were highly creative in their execution of both concept and technical
abilities and there was a wide range of concepts. “Daniel's winning poster had a more retro nostalgic look and was of
very high technical standard.”
She says the competition clearly works as a way to encourage students to aim high and build the basis for further
training and a career in arts and design.
