Rotorua student heads to Cambridge University to study.
This year’s recipient of the Girdlers Company NZ Scholarship is Kate Poskitt, from Western Heights High School, Rotorua. Kate is off to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where she will study for an undergraduate degree in Politics, Sociology and Psychology.
The scholarship was set up in 1950 by the 3rd Viscount Brentford, to provide a scholarship for ‘an outstanding New Zealander to come to England to study for a degree’. Since then, there have been over 40 scholars.
Kate said "It’s exciting to have the opportunity to be immersed in the history and culture of the UK at one of the top Universities in the world. I am looking forward to being challenged intellectually, networking and meeting other international students. Plus, I play women’s football and can’t wait to join the college’s team.
And if you are wondering what the Girdlers are; they are a fraternity of English craftsman dating back to the fourteenth century who made girdles, or in today’s parlance belts or waistbands, out of metal, leather, fabric or cord..
