Is “100% Pure” A Delusion Asks Massey’s Dr. Mike Joy

The Otago University Students’ Association (OUSA) will be holding their Environment Week this week in an effort to raise student awareness of critical environmental issues and inspire them to take action.

“Today kicks it off with one of the real exciting things as the SCITELL rapid fire lectures showcase leading Kiwi scientists as they present 18 minute lectures on their research,” said Josh Pemberton, OUSA Environmental Sustainability Officer. “Our own Vice Chancellor, Professor Harlene Hayne, will be one of the speakers talking about “Why My Vice-Chancellor Cares if I Drink Too Much”, and Massey University’s Dr. Mike Joy will be discussing New Zealand’s ‘100% pure clean green delusion’.”

“We’ve got a week of events planned including working bees, student debates and festivals,” said Josh Pemberton. “There’s an activity for everyone, it’s about giving students a chance to get involved around campus and learn a thing or two at the same time.”

From the 10th to the 15th of September, the OUSA Executive will be hosting and assisting student clubs, lecturers and environmental action groups to inform students and give them a range of activities to participate in.

The week will focus on hot topics with groups not shy to question their ‘elders’ as the Debating Society host “The Great Green Debate” on Tuesday the 11th with Mayor Dave Cull and Otago University lecturers. While Thursday’s presentation lays it all out for the University as Generation Zero present "Holey Crap: Otago University's Dirty Little Secret" an expose of mining in New Zealand and the University’s use of lignite fuel.

“The Gen Zero presentation aims to push the University to take their sustainability work even further and to reduce their use of lignite fuel,” said Pemberton. “Otago is doing some good work with their green image, so the Gen Zero crew are having a look at how they can go even further and they’ll also delve into the issues of mining in New Zealand.”

It’s not all words and no action. The Campus Greens will be running a working bee and picnic at the Campus Garden during lunchtime Wednesday, and the Students for Environmental Action (S.E.A) once again host the annual Otago Organic Festival during the Saturday evening.
