Weekend by Design

Aspiring young designers will compete this weekend to win one of the new Design Distinction Awards.

The new awards – known as dDawards – are a collaboration between the Universal College of Learning (UCOL), the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) and the Nelson-Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT). The inaugural graphic design challenge is open to secondary school students in each of their three regions.

Ninety seven secondary school students in the Manawatu have registered to take part.

The competition is based around the 48 Hour Film Festival format. That means the students have just 48 hours to produce and design marketing collateral for a cause or event - this year it is a campaign for Air New Zealand’s Grabaseat.

Rachel Hoskin, Head of UCOL’s School of Photography, Arts and Design, says some of the students taking part will use UCOL facilities over the weekend – others will work at their schools. “Awatapu for example are opening their school art department for Friday evening and then the students may come to us for the rest of the weekend. St Peter's College students will come to us on the Friday but will probably spend the rest of the weekend at school.”

All submissions will be judged and graded, with categories in Bronze, Silver and Gold. The Gold Award winners vie for the regional top prize of an iPad and a chance to claim the Supreme Award title.

The Supreme Award winner will receive return flights to Auckland courtesy of Air New Zealand grabaseat, $250 worth of accommodation from Jasons Travel and a meet and greet with Young & Shand, a top creative agency in Auckland.
