Unitec gets behind 'Green the Screen' campaign
Unitec's Department of Performing and Screen Arts is holding its third annual Tree Planting Day on at its Mt Albert campus Sunday, 19 August and all are invited to join them in supporting the 'Green the Screen' campaign.
After two years planting at Muriwai Beach, in the interests of aligning with existing sustainability initiatives started on campus, the event has moved back to Unitec. The Wairaka Stream in front of the Marae at Unitec's Mt Albert, Auckland campus is now the site and is an important tributary of Oakley Creek Te Auaunga, which comes from a freshwater spring - Te Wai Unuroa o Wairaka, in the centre of Unitec.
The Unitec Tree Planting Day is a response to the heavy paper wastage in the screen industries. The film and television industries consume tons of paper every year in New Zealand.
"This will be the third year of our Tree Planting Day, which was originally conceived from conversations between our tutors and screen arts students back in 2010," says head of department, Athina Tsoulis.
Unitec's Performing and Screen Arts department shares close links with the screen industry and hopes members from the industry can join them on this day to support the 'Green the Screen' campaign.
"Last year, we had members of parliament from the National and Green Parties plus actress, Lucy Lawless, join us at Muriwai Beach. We invite the wider community to again be part of this event and do their bit for the environment. Being sustainable and replenishing the environment we work and live in is something we want our graduates to value when they enter the screen industries," Ms Tsoulis adds.
All are welcome to attend. Planters are asked to wear suitable footwear and dress for the weather. Bring gloves and a spade if you have them. In case of bad weather, the event will be postponed to the following Sunday, 26 August same time.
