Unitec’s Albany Campus turns one
Unitec’s Albany Campus turns one
9 August 2012
Unitec’s newest campus is about to turn one. The Northern Campus based in Albany was opened in 2011 and serves the needs of students and the community of the North Shore and Rodney regions. It provides an ideal place to study for people from this region, reducing the need to travel to Mt Albert or Waitakere Campuses.
“The past year has seen many transitions taking place in the development of the Campus and has proved to be a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows,” says Sally Conway, Lecturer and Programme Leader in Language studies at the Northern Campus.
She further explains that, “We had a great first year with Pam Malcolm leading the collaboration between programmes, support staff and our wonderful student central staff who always go the extra mile. More recently there has been an ongoing commitment by all staff to maintain that special North Shore Campus feel, as we have grown to be the Northern Campus.”
The campus offers great learning experience for students who are interested in enrolling in programmes in business, communication, IT, healthcare areas and trade training. There is a great need for highly skilled employees in these fields of study within New Zealand.
In addition to foundation programmes, which prepare students for future employment and furthering their studies at Unitec, Albany Campus offers Certificate and Diploma courses in a variety of subjects. They also offer a Certificate and Diploma in English when international students first arrive in New Zealand. This encourages a range of international students to consider Unitec as an institute in which to study.
Unitec aims to offer students industry-relevant qualifications to equip them for future employment and offers pre-apprentice training to help them secure an apprenticeship with North Shore-based companies.
In 2011, 618 students were enrolled at the Albany Campus, and current enrolment stands at 991 students. 74 students completed a qualification in 2011 with 10 of these completing the National Certificate in Retail, taught in collaboration with Skills Update Training Institute (SUTI).
“The Northern Campus has continued to flourish and is now starting to show its full glory and potential. There is a sense of spirit that is inspirational and magnetic, an atmosphere that is electrifying which can be felt by students and staff. It is a symphony of world class education,” stated David Clarke, Curriculum Leader at Mt Albert and Albany from the Faculty of Technology and Built Environment.
