Whanganui UCOL wants everyone to know what goes on within their walls at this year’s Open Day on Wednesday.

UCOL’s External Relations Coordinator Katarina Hina says, “In the past we held the Open Day in the Atrium but our classes aren’t run in the Atrium. We want to give prospective students a realistic look at the programmes we offer, in the very places they are taught.”

Both campuses will be open for visitors from 10.00am-1.00 pm.

The Rutland Street campus will have classes in action and interactive displays featuring Exercise and Sport Performance, Business and Mental Health.

The Culinary students’ activities will be fed ‘live’ to the Atrium via a video link. The hair salon and beauty suite will be open and the Computer Graphic Design lab sessions will be in full swing.

Budding fashionistas have the chance to enter the fashion drawing competition and be in to win tickets to UCOL’s end of year Fashion Show.

Visitors to the nursing clinic have the opportunity to dress wounds, take blood pressures and try CPR on one of the advanced teaching mannequins or put a human body back together with the body jigsaw.

There will also be on-site information about the UCOL-led U-Skills Central School Academy. Whanganui’s City College is a hub-school for this programme where secondary school students can get a feel for training at a tertiary level while still at school.

The Quay School of the Arts will give free access to its arts facilities at the campus on the corner of Dublin and Campbell Streets.

The printing, painting, photography and Wanganui Glass School will open their studios so visitors can see the creative processes and facilities first-hand.

Students from the new Certificate in Contemporary Music Performance will show off their musical talents at the Quay School campus between 12.00pm and 1.00pm.

A prize of Beats by Dre Solo Headphones or a 16GB iPad 3 is up for grabs. Interaction with the demonstrations and displays is enough to gain entry to the draw.

A free shuttle bus will operate between the two campuses and a UCOL community bus will provide transport from specified pick up points around the city and secondary schools. Locations and timetable are available from K.Hina@ucol.ac.nz.

“We want visitors and prospective students to feel free to talk to staff and students, see for themselves our classes in action and our amazing facilities,” says Katarina.
