Careerforce Welcomes Industry Training Review Paper
2 August 2012
Careerforce, the Industry Training Organisation (ITO) for the aged-care, disability, health and social services workforces, welcomes the release of the Government’s Industry Training Review consultation document.
Richard Westlake, Chair of the Careerforce Board, says the document signals strong support from Government for the industry training sector and our progress in developing the skilled workforce.
“We appreciate the Government’s commitment to workplace-based training,” says Mr Westlake. “And we fully support the Government’s statement that our workforce needs to be given every opportunity to achieve skills and qualifications, to progress to higher levels of education and to improve their working lives.
“It is therefore vital to support our trainees from the beginning. Our Level 2 National Certificate, which is 43 credits, is often the first qualification that health and disability workers achieve. It is their most critical first step on the qualifications pathway,” says Mr Westlake.
“These trainees gain skills and confidence to progress their learning. Supporting this first step helps to boost our skilled workforce, their productivity, and our economy.”
Mr Westlake says training also has significant health and wellbeing implications.
“Our trainees support people who are often vulnerable – including older people, people with a disability or a mental health illness, and people requiring social services support. These people need quality care, and training their carers contributes to quality and productivity.
“We appreciate the Government’s endorsement of our role in arranging training with employers. Workplace-based training is an efficient, practical and cost-effective way to ensure trainees learn the skills they need while working.”
Careerforce has made significant progress in training outcomes over the past two years.
“We are expecting further growth in the near future, and we will continue to work closely with employers and industry to meet their needs.”
