Accountants receive national institute endorsement
CPIT can now train the highest levels of accountants following an important announcement from the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA).
From 2013 graduates of CPIT’s three-year Bachelor of Applied Management in Accounting can apply for Chartered Accountant (CA) membership with NZICA.
This year saw CPIT graduates eligible to apply for Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) membership with the institute however the step up to Chartered Accountants status is a huge achievement for CPIT’s Department of Business.
“For the first time, we can give students all the tertiary qualifications they need for their career as professional accountants in whichever occupation and for whichever country they choose. Previously that membership required a fourth, honours year, but the new accreditation means students need to complete just three years of study,” Department of Business Programme Leader Teresa Schwellnus said.
CPIT’s Bachelor of Applied Management in Accounting programme was recently formally recognised by NZICA as fulfilling the academic requirements for Chartered Accountant membership application.
Successful membership also requires three years of work experience and the successful completion of NZICA’s professional competency programme.
Past students of CPIT’s degree programme can also apply for NZICA Chartered Accountants membership if they have completed all the required subjects.
CPIT also offers a two-year NZ Diploma in Business for Accounting Technicians, which is an accredited NZICA outcome.
“It’s very good for CPIT’s Department of Business to have programmes recognised by national industry organisations such as the NZICA and to be accredited is just wonderful because it gives our graduates so many choices,” Teresa said.
