Gaza Ministry of Education: We built 58 new schools during 2012

Mahmoud Matar, Director General of Public Education in the Ministry of Education, confirmed that the Tawjehi (Final secondary school examination) committees are proceeding normally. There are no obstacles or violations affecting the general environment of the exams.

At a Press Conference organized by the Government Media Office as part of the government-sponsored campaign of “Nation Building,” the official talked about the achievements in the education sector during recent times, and related activities in education.

Matar also talked about the achievements at each educational stage. He said the Ministry is on the verge of completing the outline of a curriculum for kindergartens, to raise the quality and improve development and understanding.

Regarding the primary stage, The Director General said the Ministry has given special priority to Grades One to Four, by focusing increased attention on them, and giving consideration to the curriculum, to modify or support it with enriching material, as well as paying attention to training teachers to inculcate moral values among students.

Grades Five to Ten will also have attention paid to their curriculum, treatment programs and the development of performance indicators to measure academic achievement, within a unified national examination and indicator system.

As for high school, he explained that the Ministry has introduced a new academic discipline, legal education, which will be introduced in the coming academic year, 2012-2013. In addition, the Ministry of Education has coordinated with local and private institutions for the implementation of awareness programs for students in schools.

Matar confirmed that the Ministry faces big difficulties in the Higher Education sector through supervising only three governmental institutes: University of Palestine, the Faculty of Science and Technology, and the Palestine Technical College, but only has indirect control over the rest of the institutes and universities. However, the Ministry has oversight regarding programs and disciplines that are put forward for approval by the universities, and he stressed that the Ministry imposed strict control over disciplines that do not comply with the requirements of the community.

The Director General of Education mentioned the Revolution in the building of schools by the Ministry, noting that in the past year there has been a remarkable increase in the building of schools, especially in places where population growth is high, and to get rid of the schools that are running split shifts, with morning sessions and afternoon sessions. 58 new schools have been built.

He also talked about the losses suffered by schools during the last war on the Gaza Strip, and those caused by the current siege of Gaza, which required speedy solutions to be found to build new schools to keep pace with the rising population, and the requirements of the community.
