Ready to cook up a storm

Thirteen Chinese students are celebrating the completion of a Cookery qualification at Whanganui UCOL.

The students are the second group to come to Whanganui to study for the National C ertificate in Hospitality – Professional Cookery Level 4 at Whanganui UCOL.

They will now apply for a one year work visa which they are entitled to after their year of study.

Lecturer Gina Wagstaffe says the study experience was especially valuable for this group of Chinese students.

“To help them with their English and to help them make community links, we invited members of the public and UCOL staff members to come to special classes in cooking Chinese specialties (hedgehog buns and dumplings), taught by the students. It was a big success and we will be repeating the classes for the third cohort of Chinese students who have just started their studies with us.”
Before coming to Whanganui to study, the Chinese students have already completed a three year Diploma in Chinese Cooking. Their New Zealand study experiences, to improve their Western cooking skills, are organised via UCOL’s office in Guangzhou, China.
