UCOL Photography Wows Chinese

Two UCOL Art and Design lecturers had 60,000 pairs of eyes see their work in China earlier this month and brought home a top award.

Wanganui School of Design lecturer Debbie Hahn and Bachelor in Applied Visual Imaging Photography lecturer Kaye Davis were invited to exhibit their work in the Shanghai International Science & Art Exhibition. During the four day event, it was estimated 60,000 people passed through the doors.

From 600 pieces of artwork, the pair won the Excellent Artwork Award for their 18 piece photography exhibition. Theirs was one of only ten excellence awards. Their work is among a small selection that has been chosen to travel to the International Science and Art Exhibition in Macau in July.

Debbie says the whole experience was incredible and she was astounded by the scale of the event. “We were treated to wonderful hospitality and great public interest in our work.”

The pair was assigned a Shanghai University student who ‘interpreted’ their work for the non-English speaking visitors to the exhibition.

Debbie and Kaye were keen to promote UCOL’s creative programmes and handed out hundreds of information brochures to interested high school age students and visitors.

Wanganui School of Design graduates Yeoh Guan Hong, Cheang Lin Yew, and Billy also won a top award for their exhibition and their work will travel to Macau. The three operate a busy design studio in Shanghai called Super Nature Design.

Yeoh was a Post Graduate Supervisor for the WSD and maintains close contact with his former colleagues at Whanganui UCOL.
