Technology under threat from government changes to school staffing
Technology and specialist subjects for our Y7 and Y8 students will be hit hard because of the government’s decision to
change the way technology teachers are funded.
The President of the NZAIMS and Principal of Pukekohe Intermediate School, Gary Sweeney says more than 300 intermediate
school teachers could be taken out of the school system next year.
“That will have a huge impact on our schools and it means that school principals will be faced with some very hard
decisions about whether they can adequately resource these subjects,” he says.
“It will directly affect how employ technology teachers and other specialists subjects.”
Mr Sweeney says the attack on curriculum resourcing will be interpreted as a narrowing of the curriculum.
“It is becoming clear that the focus on national standards will be at the detriment of other very important aspects of
learning and opportunities that generations of New Zealand children have enjoyed.”
