More study—more money
University study has paid off for students, who tonight were presented with Freemasons scholarships totalling $220,000. The A-grade students were handed their scholarships by the Rt. Hon. Sir Don McKinnon at Parliament’s Legislative Council Chamber (subs 22 May), with two students being graduates of his ‘alma mater’, Lincoln University, Rachel Grout (left) and Paula Charmley.
Seven post-graduate scholarships of $10,000 and 25 university scholarships of $6,000 were presented to 32 students from Auckland, AUT, Waikato, Massey, Victoria, Canterbury, Lincoln and Otago universities by the former Deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand and past Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
Over the last 34 years, Freemasons New Zealand has - through The Freemasons Charity - funded nearly $3.97 million in scholarships to 986 students, making it one of the country’s largest, privately-funded university scholarship programmes.
Addressing the students, Sir Don stressed the importance of education.
“In my travels to countries everywhere I can attest to people’s liberation through education. With education there are no boundaries, without it there is only a future shackled to poverty.”
Freemasons Grand Master Selwyn Cooper complimented parents and families of the scholarship recipients, all of whom are A-grade students with strong and active involvement in their communities.
“Without the encouragement and support of families, the success of these scholars might not have been so exceptional.
“We are all members of the one community and in our own way we all pull our weight and contribute. These are not the easiest of times, and many struggle in this global recession. But with a sound education, plans and ambitions, there is no doubting that a bright and exciting future beckons,” said Selwyn Cooper.
Speaking directly to the students, the Freemasons Grand Master also made a plea.
“Although I recognise the inevitable attraction for you to travel and to extend your research internationally, I plea that you never forget your homeland. I hope that in the fullness of time you return and further contribute to your community and country with skills and talents honed by overseas experience.”
NB: PG means scholar awarded a Post Graduate Scholarship ($10,000). All other scholarships are university scholarships ($6,000).
