Solid Energy brings the Christchurch School for Young Writers to West Coast Classrooms
The Christchurch based School for Young Writers will be running workshops in West Coast schools this month thanks to sponsorship from Solid Energy. There are five two-day workshops scheduled in Greymouth and Westport and will involve students from eight different primary and high schools.
“We have been sending our tutors to Greymouth and Buller schools since 2007 but cost-covering has always been problematic,” says Glyn Strange who is the founding director of the School for Young Writers. “It wasn’t until three years ago, when Solid Energy agreed to provide sponsorship for the trips that the programme really took off and now more schools are taking part each year.”
The Young Writers' workshops often focus on poetry because short pieces of writing can be completed in the limited time constraints but also because the writing skills and techniques are valid in all writing. Some very fine work has been produced in previous years and West Coast writers have featured a number of times in the School for Young Writers' twice-yearly Write On magazine whose audience extends throughout New Zealand.
Solid Energy supports a range of educational and youth development initiatives within its communities across New Zealand.
