CPIT Open Day presents top recovery speakers

The Speakers Series at CPIT on Saturday 28 January presents the latest news from five of the most exciting recovery initiatives in town.

The Speakers Series is a key feature of CPIT’s Open Day, which runs from 11am – 3pm with a range of family friendly activities and the opportunity to explore study options for 2012.

Visitors to the Speakers Series can catch up on plans for the arts, business and community sectors during a series of 15 minute talks from 1pm to 2.45pm in CPIT’s Madras Street campus Imagitech theatre. The five speakers are at the forefront of work that will transform Christchurch in the short term and help to build a vibrant city in the future too.

CPIT has a leading part to play in skills training for the rebuild of Christchurch and in supporting the institute’s community and industry partners CPIT’s Kaiarahi Hana O’Regan talks about new Maori and Pasifika trade training programmes and why success in this area is essential for the future of the entire country.

CPIT business student Deon Swiggs explains why he is sending senior managers out to help with frontline community work. It’s just one of the many projects coordinated by his Rebuild Christchurch Foundation.

CPIT’s Martin Trusttum joins forces with George Parker from Free Theatre and Arts Voice to give the lowdown on the resurgence of the arts in central Christchurch – it’s called the River of Arts and it maps out both long term plans and transitional projects such as the Arts Circus and CPIT’s Art Box project.

From painted pianos to bowling greens, the Gapfiller team has created many community events and revitalised urban spaces on demolition sites around town. Trent Hiles from Gapfiller will talk about the team’s latest projects.

Wil McLellan is leading the push for a Google-style, ICT hub in Christchurch called the EPIC Campus and he talks about what this development could mean for Christchurch in the short and long term.

Also at CPIT’s Open Day, buskers and musicians including an exclusive show by The Loons Circus Theatre Company at 12.30pm, a BBQ, activities to try and family fun too.
