Relationship grows between Whitireia and Habitat for Humanity

Whitireia New Zealand and Habitat for Humanity have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), for the building of a new house for a family in Porirua.

Don Campbell, Chief Executive, Whitireia and Neil McDonald, Board Chairman, Habitat for Humanity Lower North Island signed the MOU on Monday of this week. “We are pleased to be entering into another partnership with Habitat for Humanity” said Don Campbell. “This will be the second house that we have partnered together to build, having completed the last one in 2010”.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Whitireia again” said Gillian Burns, Resource Development Manager, Habitat for Humanity. “The last house was such a positive experience not only for us, but the students and the family it was built for”.

The house will be built in the grounds of the Whitireia Industry Trades Centre in Elsdon. Students studying carpentry, plumbing and electrical will be involved in the building of the house which is due to start in March 2012.

A Cambodian family of four that have recently immigrated to Porirua will be the ones lucky enough to live in the house once it is completed. It will be built to the fully enclosed and lined stage and then transported to a site in Ascot Park where it will be completed by Habitat volunteers, staff and the family receiving the home.

“We are pleased to be working with Habitat for Humanity again” said Shayne Warren, Carpentry Programme Manager, Whitireia. “Building this house provides our students with real hands on experience, it’s great to have a real project like this for them to work on, it will provide great learning opportunities for all trades students involved” he said.

The house will have 3 bedrooms and will be 103m2. Its design will create an environment that will benefit the family who will be living in it.
