UCOL design graduates among the BEST

UCOL Whanganui School of Design graduate Sam Kemp claimed a bronze medal in the esteemed Best Design Awards recently.

Sam’s work Define the line earned him recognition in the student category of the Designers Institute of New Zealand event, an annual showcase of excellence in graphic, spatial, product and interactive design.

Twenty five year old Sam graduated with Honours from the Whanganui School of Design last year. His tutors Debbie Hahn, Lynn Hurst and Chris Gibson are justifiably proud of Sam’s achievement in such a prestigious competition.

Sam created Define the line while a student at UCOL. The work is a ten metre fold out publication and interactive installation. He says the work is “a personal journey to discover what defines me. It gave a small window into my thoughts, questions and findings that I had discovered. I expressed my findings graphically using the results of minimalist typographic experiments.”

This year’s Best Design Awards attracted a staggering 812 entries, the highest in the 23 year history of the event.

A multitude of Gold, Silver and Bronze pins were handed out, with four winners picking up the most coveted pin of all, the Purple Pin, representing supreme design within each category.

One of the Graphic Design Purple Pin recipients was Kris Sowersby, who graduated from the Whanganui School of Design in 2003. After brief employment as a graphic designer Kris started the Klim Type Foundry in 2005 and is currently based in Wellington where he specializes in typeface design.

His entry, Sentimental Journey, in collaboration with artist Sarah Maxey, is described as an ‘interpretation of the Exquisite Corpse game where a collection of words is collectively assembled for the entertainment and amusement of the audience’.
