Top Business Students Win Scholarship to China
One of Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology’s partner Universities in China has offered a unique experience to two commerce students.
Third year Bachelor of Commerce students, Ashleigh Moulder and Lucy Ryan have been selected to be tutorial assistants on a second year Management course on the NMIT Diploma of Commerce at the Zhejiang Water College in Hangzhou city. They will be there from October 4th to the 23rd.
Ashleigh and Lucy topped their respective classes when they completed this course in Nelson and are now looking forward to the experience of being able to help others studying for the course on the other side of the world.
Lucy Ryan says she’s done some travelling, but never to China and she’s very excited.
“I feel really honoured to have the opportunity to go, not only for us personally but for NMIT and Nelson. We realise it’s greater than just two students going to China, it’s about building further great relationships with these prestigious universities.”
The Zhejiang Water College is in an area of Hangzhou city which is known as a ‘knowledge zone’ as it includes 14 universities. The city has a population of around 8 million people.
Lucy says it’s humbling to be able to go there and help teach.
“While we will be there to help the students learn, we are also looking forward to learning from them about their culture – they have a lot to teach us. It’s also made us realise the value of the Chinese and international students we sit beside in class and this trip is enhancing our relationships here as well, as the Chinese students have been great at sharing advice and information on what it will be like for us in China.”
NMIT CEO Tony Gray says NMIT is delivering programmes in three Chinese universities, and while teaching staff regularly visit them, this is the first time NMIT students have travelled to China as representatives of the institute.
“We have developed excellent relationships with our three sister universities in China so this is a great opportunity for us to share some student experience across cultures and start to make real the Internationalisation we have planned. Lucy and Ashleigh will be fantastic ambassadors for NMIT and we look forward to sharing in the knowledge they will bring back.”
Ashleigh, an ex-Garin College pupil is a full-time student, and Lucy, formerly Head Girl of Waimea College, works part-time as a conference organizer while studying both completing double majors in Management and Marketing at NMIT.
NMIT Management & Marketing lecturer, John Inglis who manages the NMIT Diploma course in China, says there are 65 students on the course at the Zhejiang Water College in Hangzhou city, which is taught in english. They are about to start on the research projects, which Lucy and Ashleigh will be helping them with.
“They are both great ambassadors for NMIT and Nelson. Academically they are top students who have strong work ethics. This trip will hopefully see closer relations with NMIT and our colleagues in China plus be an amazing growth experience for our students.”
John Inglis already Chinese students studying business at NMIT have been helping the two women with advice about what China will be like. Hangzhou city
Both students hope to take in some of the famous Hangzhou sites and culture when they have time off from their tutoring jobs.
