Canterbury Tertiary College places to treble
Young Cantabrians will have more opportunities than ever to start training for their careers while also completing secondary school after Minster of Education Anne Tolley announced today that Canterbury Tertiary College (CTC) places will treble next year.
CPIT, as the leading provider of CTC, currently has 148 places for secondary school age young adults at the Sullivan Avenue campus studying a range of trades such as carpentry, electrical engineering and automotive. This capacity will be expanded to provide more subjects and places for 550 students next year. The expanded portfolio of programmes will be provided in partnership with Aoraki Polytechnic, Tai Poutini Polytechnic, Southern Institute of Technology and Lincoln University.
“This is an exciting collaboration of the vocational providers in Canterbury to ensure that students stay at school to complete a minimum of Level 2 NCEA studies while also beginning their pathways towards a vocational qualification,” CTC Director Fiona Haynes said. “We are very pleased with the minister’s announcement and the opportunity to take a model that we at CPIT have found to be very successful and extend it into other local institutes.”
Provision of the programmes will be organised to meet with schools’ needs with most taking place either on three afternoons a week or for two full days. In some cases the delivery will take place on a school site where that is shown to be the best way to enable students’ full access to this new initiative.
As well as providing cost-effective opportunities for young people, the CTC training and education initiative responds to the need for an expanded workforce that will be required to help rebuild Christchurch in the coming years.
CTC programmes likely to be offered in 2012 include Carpentry, Automotive, Electrical, Engineering, Pre Health, Engineering, Construction & Architecture, Hospitality, Plumbing, Business Administration & Computing, Painting and Decorating, Plasterboard, Pre Science, Beauty skills, Hairdressing, Civil Construction, Brick, Block & Paving, Masonry Trades, Height Access, Roofing and Economics. In addition a Multi Trades option is available at year 11 to introduce students to a range of trades so they can make informed decisions about their future.
