Open Day well timed for students’ career planning
Whanganui UCOL’s main Open Day for the year is on this Wednesday and organisers are hoping that the Prime Minister John
Key’s visit to the city will spur secondary students into action.
Open Day Coordinator Katarina Hina says Mr Key will be talking to Year 12 and 13 students at Wanganui City College on
Wednesday morning, about making good choices for their tertiary education.
“That’s exactly what our Open Day is about,” she says. “It’s an opportunity for young people to get the information they
need to make important decisions about their future.”
Katarina says although the focus is on information (and demonstrations) on the range of programmes available at
Whanganui UCOL for 2012, there will also be plenty of opportunities to eat free food and have fun. This will include a
student arcade theme, competitions and listening to two featured bands. Students from UCOL”s Contemporary Music
programme will play, as well as the Wanganui City College band, The Dub Boys, winner of this year’s Smokefree Rock
Quest.
There will also be mime dancing by Wanganui’s Kupe Renata, and activities organised by the Inspire Gym, formerly the
UCOL gym.
Competitions include a ‘race’ for their fastest rower on the rowing machine, part of the Exercise and Sport programmes.
Amongst the displays, Katarina says the Open Day will also feature programmes not available in Whanganui but offered at
the UCOL campus in Palmerston North, including Contemporary Music and Performing Arts. Katarina says: “We do this
community a disservice if we don’t let them know about some of these specialist programmes only available at UCOL
Palmerston North.”
Private training providers in Whanganui have also been invited to showcase their programmes.
The Open Day will be held on Wednesday 24 August from 10 am to 1 pm in the Whanganui UCOL Atrium and in Rutland Street
where there will be a mini street party.
