Wonder Axis Impresses Fashion Judges
CPIT fashion technology and design student, 21 year old Georgia Currie, is all nerves after being named as a Westpac Young Designer top 10 finalist on Wednesday night.
If the public vote her through to the final three, she will be on her way to New Zealand Fashion Week next month, which she says “is the ultimate fashion dream. I am still so young, the exposure would lead to so much opportunity; it would cut out the time it will take to reach my goals.
“I can’t sit still! I was on Facebook last night at 3am asking people to vote for me.”
At stake is the title of Young Designer 2011, along with $5000 cash and mentoring from leading designer and businesswoman Angela Lewis. Plus, the top three finalists get to show their work at New Zealand Fashion Week.
Georgia chose three outfits from her Wonder Axis collection, which recently showed at CPIT’s third year showcase Debut 2011. The collection was created to an industry brief from Therese Rawthorne, a Sydney based designer with whom Georgia completed her internship earlier this year.
“The acknowledgement is really rewarding because I put so much effort into the collection and it has been so tough this year with the earthquakes,” she said.
Georgia was inspired by inaugural 2010 Young Designer winner Jess Britten, who graduated from the CPIT School of Fashion last year. Thanks to the kickstart the award gave to her career, Jess is now working with the label Lonely Hearts.
Georgia is no stranger to hard work having studied classical ballet in Sydney before becoming interested in fashion. She feels very fortunate to have already discovered a second passion in life, and she hopes her efforts in the fashion world will eventually lead to working with a designer and having her own label. “That sort of rolls off the tongue easily, but it is very difficult!”
To help Georgia get started, vote for her at www.facebook.com/westpacyoungdesigner (you can vote more than once).
The final three will be announced on 15 August.
