Art Students Set Public Space on Fire with Mura O Te Ahi Exhibition

Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts and Manukau Institute of Technology’s (MIT) School of Visual Arts will for the third year running, give four local art students the opportunity to experience life as professional artists when their work is exhibited in a well known public art gallery.

The exhibition project, Mura o te ahi / The heat of the fire, is part of an arts partnership between Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts and MIT School of Visual Arts and consists of four short-term projects developed by students in the final stages of their study.

Each of the four students will have their project exhibited for one week accompanied by a critical discussion held in the gallery. Members of the public are welcome to attend and participate in these events at the Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts in Reeves Road, Pakuranga.

MIT School of Visual Arts students were invited to submit exhibition proposals of which four were then selected by Te Tuhi. The students have a very hands-on approach to the exhibition project, responsible for installing and de-installing their own work with support from their lecturers and Te Tuhi’s exhibition team.

Director for Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts, James McCarthy says, “We developed this opportunity for students to exhibit their work outside of tertiary study to a wide public audience in a public art gallery. It is a chance for them to learn essential professional skills and for the public to provide feedback on their work.”

The partnership between Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts and MIT places emphasis on the students experimenting with ideas and extending their artistic practices. It draws on the energy and fire of students and staff at both institutions and their commitment to showcasing student artists.

The exhibition opens on Saturday 16 July and runs through until Wednesday 10 August with the programme order as follows;

The four projects that make up Mura o te ahi provide an opportunity to see exciting new work by a diverse group of students from MIT School of Visual Arts.
