OSH courses inspire Graham to re-enter the workforce
Studying on the new National Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Level 3 (Workplace Safety) ten-week evening course at NorthTec’s Safe Trades has given Graham Watson, 48, optimism to re-enter the workforce.
Working in the building industry had given Graham so much enjoyment before a tragic work accident last April changed his life for good. He fell 4.5m from a roof breaking his pelvis, wrist, arm and his shoulder (in three places) which left him in hospital for seven days.
The work accident has left Graham barely able to swing a hammer now he says, with his recovery indicated to take 18 months.
“It was devastating. You have it all one day and the next it is gone.”
Graham has found a new lease on life by studying the Level 3 National Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (Workplace Safety) at NorthTec’s Safe Trades, so that he can upskill himself to re-enter the workforce, albeit for a slightly different career.
Following his Level 3 OSH Certificate, Graham is going on to complete the Level 4 National Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (Coordination) at NorthTec, which explores health and safety at a management level.
Eventually, Graham would like to become a project manager and work in the construction industry simply commenting “it’s in the blood.” He feels his building background and completed NorthTec qualifications will offer advantages for him to do this.
