Education Ministry: Christchurch Earthquake Advice

Christchurch City

The Ministry strongly advises all schools and early childhood education services in Christchurch City to remain closed on Tuesday 14 June so that management can make a preliminary assessment.

The earthquakes on Monday 13 June have had a serious impact on electricity, water, bridges and there has been extensive new liquefaction and some flooding.

In these circumstances, safety is paramount. Any school that has a concern about damage should contact the Ministry phone for advice, Freephone 0800 225 580.

ECE services concerned about damage should seek a specialist assessment in the same manner that was required for the February earthquake.

Selwyn and Waimakariri Districts
If your school or service is in Waimakariri or Selwyn, your board or management needs to make an assessment to open or close based on your particular circumstances. Use the Ministry advice on preliminary assessments to guide your decision.

More advice
The Ministry will post further advice for all schools and ECEs on Tuesday 14 June afternoon.
