Aoraki Polytechnic Commit to Relieving NZ's Trades Skill Shortage

Aoraki Polytechnic has confirmed they will offer a midyear start for their carpentry and engineering programmes, starting July.

Additionally, a condensed version over six months, starting June will be available to students who can manage a heavy workload, "The intensive study will require more effort from students but "we will provide them with support to ensure high quality learning and success," Deputy Chief Executive, Alex Cabrera said.

Subject to central government approval, Aoraki will offer an option of 24 hours per week over a full year, or condensed into 32 hours a week over six months with classes starting in June. The initiatives are to support the demand Canterbury is facing from the effects of the Christchurch earthquakes and the long term shortage of trades people New Zealand is facing.

Certificates in brick, block and paving and pre-trade electrical will continue as usual but with starts July, Aoraki Polytechnic is one of the first tertiary providers of Brick, Block and Paving in the South Island. The hope is that participants in these programmes will be able to enter the industry with a level of skill immediately useful to the reconstruction effort industry needs across the wider region.

Aoraki Polytechnic intends to offer mid-year starts for construction trades programmes: Carpentry (Level 4) Timaru | Full year and condensed options, Certificate in Pre-Employment Brick, Block and Paving (Level 3) Timaru | Christchurch, Certificate in Pre-Trade Electrical (Level 2) Timaru, Certificate in General Engineering (Level 2) Timaru | Full year and condensed options, Certificate in Trade Skills (Entry Level), Timaru, Certificate in Rural Machinery (Level 2), and National Certificate in Agriculture (Introductory Skills) (Level 2).
