The Open Polytechnic celebrates Wellington
graduation
As part of its nationwide graduation celebrations, the Open Polytechnic will hold its Wellington graduation ceremony today (16 May) at the Michael Fowler Centre.
Starting a National Diploma in Architectural Technology at 17, Open Polytechnic graduate Kevin Hagen originally intended on going to university but changed his mind after being offered employment which allowed him to train on the job instead.
“It was a fantastic opportunity, my employer Prenail Frames and Trusses offered to take me under their wing, train me for their business, and also support me in working towards the qualification I wanted to do,” says Kevin.
“Although part time study meant making some sacrifices, I’m grateful because I gained years of invaluable work experience in the construction industry that I would not have got elsewhere.”
Kevin says he is looking forward to the special occasion and his employer, family and wife will be there to celebrate alongside him.
“It is a great feeling to have finally finished the diploma, having juggled my work commitments throughout.”
Nearly 80 graduates will receive their diploma and degrees at the Wellington ceremony. Guest speaker for the evening will be Phil O’Reilly, Chief Executive of Business NZ.
Over 600 students will receive their diplomas and degrees from the Open Polytechnic this graduating year.
