Chilton Saint James School appoints new Principal

Lower Hutt independent girls’ school, Chilton Saint James School has appointed current Associate Principal, Mrs Jude Fawcett, as its new Principal effective from 12 April. Mrs Fawcett replaces Dr Jillian de Araugo who is returning to Australia after six years at Chilton.

Chilton Saint James School is a leading independent school with approximately 600 students across their co-educational Preschool and girls’ only school from Years 1 to 13.

In announcing the appointment, Board of Trustees Chair, Judith Hardie, said Mrs Fawcett is an able leader with outstanding credentials and experience to carry Chilton forward in the years ahead.

“Jude is currently the project director for a Ministry of Education ICT project being run at Chilton in conjunction with Ss Peter and Paul School and St Bernard’s College. She has demonstrated her ability to work strategically. Her strengths in organisation and management have been instrumental in the successful and smooth running of Chilton including during her term last year as Acting Principal.”

Mrs Fawcett has been Associate Principal at Chilton since 2003. As background, she holds a Masters degree in Education from Massey University majoring in Management as well as a Diploma in Physical Education from Otago University and Diploma in Teaching. She began her career as a teacher of Physical Education, Mathematics and Science at Auckland Girls’ Grammar School, was then promoted to Head of the Physical Education Department at Palmerston North Girls’ High School before moving on to Massey University’s College of Education as a lecturer in early childhood, primary and secondary teacher education programmes.

Mrs Fawcett was the CEO of Netball Singapore, the Singapore National Coach for five years and a lecturer at Nangyang Technological University. On her return to New Zealand in 1998, she was the first General Manager of Netball Southland, home of the very successful Southern Sting.

Since 2003 she has been Acting Principal at Chilton on a number of occasions, most recently for the whole of Term Two in 2010.

Mrs Hardie said the Board of Trustees has seen Mrs Fawcett demonstrate “a continued commitment to the values and ethos of Chilton Saint James School, and we are certain she will carry this commitment forward in her new role as our next Principal.”
