Streamlined UK Visa Application Process for New Zealand Students
The UK government announced, as part of wider changes to Tier 4, that it will introduce a streamlined application process for students from countries whose nationals pose a low immigration risk to the UK. These changes will be brought in from summer 2011.
On March 31 the UK government issued a 'statement of intent' setting out how Tier 4 of the points-based system will operate.
New Zealand has been identified as one of the countries that will benefit from this streamlined process. The process will mean that New Zealand visa applicants will generally not be expected to provide documentary evidence of maintenance and qualifications at the time of application.
This should simplify the application process, reducing the administrative burden for prospective UK students. The substantive requirements will remain the same, including the 28 day rules for maintenance funds, and students must be able to provide the appropriate documents if subsequently requested.
The UK Border Agency Regional Director for Asia Pacific, James Sharp said:
“International students not only make a vital contribution to the UK economy but they also help make our education system one of the best in the world.
We recognise that a one-size fits all approach is not appropriate which is why we have simplified the application process for New Zealand students, making it quicker and easier for them to apply to study in the UK. This doesn’t mean we are softening the entry requirements for these students, but adapting the process in recognition of the low migration risk posed by New Zealand nationals.”
The first round of changes to Tier 4 will come into effect on 21 April 2011, with further changes, including the new streamlined process, taking effect in summer 2011 and final changes in April 2012.
