Whitireia Foundation 2011 Scholarship Recipients

32 students have been awarded Whitireia Foundation scholarships at a ceremony held at Whitireia recently.

Over 120 people including friends and family of recipients, sponsors, council members and staff attended the event at Whitireia which saw over $45,000, ranging from amounts of $500 - $3000, being awarded in scholarships to students studying at Whitireia in 2011, for use towards study fees.

The event started with a welcome by Taku Parai followed by an introduction by Deirdre Dale, Whitireia Foundation Chair. Jansen Summer, Ford Summer Lawyers delivered a speech on behalf of the sponsors with the formal events ending with a moving speech by Keri-Mei Zagrobelna, Whitireia Bachelor of Applied Arts, Visual Arts student, a 2011 scholarship recipient.

I feel very honoured and delighted to be a recipient of a scholarship said Viti Jamieson. “It is a significant help towards the cost of the Bachelor of Nursing Degree I am undertaking at Whitireia”.

Peri Te Wao another recipient said the scholarship he received will ease some of the worries around financial stability during his three years of study on the Bachelor of Nursing Maori programme.

The aim of the Whitireia Foundation is to assist students to realise their potential as well as to promote, support and enhance the goals and activities through research projects, educational innovation and improving campus facilities. It has been running since June 2000. The Whitireia Foundation is run by a small group of energetic supporters of Whitireia New Zealand who organise all the sponsorship. The Foundation team includes Deirdre Dale (past Chief Executive of Whitireia), Dennis Sharman, Chris Kirk-Burnand, Margaret Faulkner (all past Whitireia Council Chairs) as well as highly active community leaders Tim Sheppard and Ross Garner. The group represents a significant amount of experience in Whitireia and economic development in the region.
