$190k in scholarships for 38 students from trust of popular local farmer
Guardian Trust is delighted to have distributed $190,000 to 38 deserving Waikato students from the trust of popular local farmer, the late David Johnstone. For the third time in three years, the David Johnstone Charitable Trust, managed by Guardian Trust, has made a six-figure donation in the form of scholarships for new students at Waikato tertiary institutions.
As in 2009, when $190,000 was distributed from the trust, the funds were given to students in their final year of high school who are commencing their tertiary studies in 2011, either at Waikato University or the Waikato Institute of Technology. In 2008, 37 Waikato students received $185,000 between them. The trust is now worth more than $6 million, and has distributed more than $1 million since 1995.
Mr Johnstone, a well-known farming identity in the Waikato, harboured a lifelong wish to have had a better education. His answer was to form the David Johnstone Charitable Trust and make one of its principal objectives to help young people expand their knowledge in the agricultural fields.
The presentation of the scholarships was made to the students earlier this month.
