Huia Te Reo changes

Huia Te Reo changes

The symposium that was to have formed a part of Huia Te Reo 2010 will not go ahead as planned this year.

A panel has been appointed by the government to review its Maori Language Strategy and Sector. An integral part of that process is consulting with a range of communities and stakeholders with a view to making policy recommendations to the government.

“Huia Te Reo would have provided a valuable platform for all of the key stakeholders however in light of the panel’s brief to engage the same people and to avoid duplication, we have re-arranged our annual hui”, says Chief Executive, Glenis Philip-Barbara.

Māori language supporters, advocates and communities are advised that Huia Te Reo 2010, showcasing exemplar projects and initiatives which contribute to the revitalisation of the Māori language and the Māori Language Awards is happening at the Energy Events Centre in Rotorua.

The hui will take place all day 8 October starting with a pōwhiri at 9:00am and concluding at midday on 9 October. The awards will take place on the evening of 9 October.

The hui will feature an expo of all products, programmes, grand ideas and resources created to support te Reo Māori and presentations from successful initiatives including a summary of Mā Te Reo projects and achievements over the last nine years.

Various workshops will run concurrently and include an opportunity to play “Te Kī o Rahi”, a fast growing traditional Māori language game, attend to Māori language planning for your home or community and have a go at doing Zumba in te reo Māori.

The hui will conclude on Saturday with the morning devoted to an interactive panel discussion with Commissioners of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori past and present keen to share their experience of Māori Language revitalisation in the context of the communities and groups they have served over many years.

Māori Language enthusiasts and activists will have the opportunity to chew the fat with the likes of Ruakere Hond, Iritana Tawhiwhirangi, Evelyn M. Tobin, Te Awanui Black, Wayne Ngata and Erima Henare.

The expo event is free to attend, however attendees are required to register.

Tickets for the Māori Language Awards are available for purchase now. To enquire about booths at the expo and/or general queries please ring toll free on 0800 6283736, or email reception@tetaurawhiri.govt.nz
