Wellington's Largest Ever Game of Scrabble Coming In September
Wellington's largest ever game of Scrabble on will be happening on September 8 in Cuba Mall.
The board is over 20 sq metres and will be set up by Literacy Aotearoa Wellington (LAW) just north of West Bank arcade.
Everyone is welcome to come between 12 – 2pm and contribute a word, with every score being recorded.
The aim of the Scrabble board is to encourage learners to reach out to organisations like LAW who can assist those with
reading and numeracy difficulties. Prizes will be given away on the day, as well as appearances by guests including
Wellington Central MP Grant Robertson.
“Good literacy skills are a vital part of all Kiwis achieving their potential.” said Mr Robertson.
“It is important not just for the individuals concerned, but also for New Zealand as a whole. If we are to increase our
productivity and grow a sustainable economy, improved literacy skills will be a vital component of that.”
Over 40% of New Zealanders have difficulty with the reading and writing requirements of their jobs. Over half of the
adult working population are estimated to have low numeracy.[1]
September 8 will be the 44th International Literacy Day. The UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organisation) started the day in 1966 to raise awareness of the how important literacy is to individuals, communities
and societies.
LAW offers free and accessible support to learners for literacy and numeracy skills. Learners can also participate in
whanau budgeting programmes, learn computer literacy skills and join introduction classes to Te Reo Mäori for free. More
