Export Education: Where Will it Grow From Here?

“Just last week, Hon Steven Joyce, the Minister for Tertiary Education, announced the continued strong growth of export education in New Zealand,” says Education New Zealand CEO Robert Stevens. “This growth doesn’t happen on its own, so it is vital that the industry and government continue to discuss how we can work together to keep that positive momentum going.”

Growth will be high on the agenda at the 19th Annual New Zealand International Education Conference in Christchurch on August 5 and 6. Over 450 delegates, speakers and industry insiders will gather to analyse the trends, and update the industry on what to expect going forward.

Hon Steven Joyce will be a keynote speaker at the conference, sharing his views on the industry’s future. Other noted speakers will include Nigel Bickle, deputy chief executive of Immigration New Zealand with a look at how his department can help to improve the flow of students into New Zealand; Robert Stevens, CEO of Education New Zealand, with an overview of the direction the industry is heading; Michael T Jones, Chief Technology Advocate from Google, who will discuss how technology is changing the way education will be delivered in the future; and Hon Bruce Baird AM, who headed the Australian Government’s review on their export education industry, will share his insights into the changing realities across the Tasman. Corin Dann from NZI Business will also share his analysis of how the New Zealand and global economies will affect export education in the coming year.

“This is where New Zealand comes to talk about export education each year,” says Robert Stevens. “It’s the one chance for our industry to touch base, hear about the latest trends and predictions, and plan their strategies going forward.”

In addition to delegates from New Zealand, speakers, education agents and offshore marketing mangers will be attending from Thailand, Australia, the UK, South Korea, China and Vietnam, making this a truly international conference.

Education is a major export industry for New Zealand, generating $2.5 billion per year in foreign exchange. Education New Zealand is the umbrella organisation for New Zealand’s education exporters, and organises an annual conference attended by members of all industry sectors and several government departments.
