Hundreds Of Teenagers To Attend Road Safety Expos

ROTORUA 23.07.10: Hundreds of local teenagers are taking part in road safety expos next month following two serious crashes involving youth over the last week.

Two hundred and fifty Western Heights High School students are taking part in the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness event at the Rotorua Racecourse on Wednesday 4 August; while students from John Paul College, Rotorua Boys High School, and Reporoa College are attending Blue Light’s Anti Drink Drive Drug Expo in Tauranga on Monday 16 August.

Both events are supported by Rotorua District Council and RDC road safety coordinator Jodie Lawson says road safety awareness has been heightened by the crashes which involved 17 young people.

“John Paul College called me and asked to bring all 160 of their Year 11 students to the Anti Drink Drive Drug Expo. They want to do whatever they can to support the safety of youth on our roads.

“The general feeling around schools is ‘how many more crashes can one community take?’. Students, teachers, and parents are realising the importance of taking advantage of road safety initiatives that are available for Rotorua schools.”

Ms Lawson says driving can be a risky business, with traffic crashes the leading cause of death and serious injury for young New Zealanders.

She says international research has found that 40% fewer crashes occur among those young people who receive 120 hours of supervised driving experience before driving solo - compared to young people who only received 50 hours.

“I really encourage parents to help their children better equip themselves with road safety awareness by enrolling them on a defensive driving course.

“’Practice’ is a NZ Transport Agency practical driving programme to help learner drivers develop the skills they need to pass their restricted licence test. It’s a great way to help learner drivers stay safe on the roads and it's completely free.”
