Zero possums ... with Zero Fees
Zero possums ... with Zero Fees
The Department of Conservation and the Southern Institute of Technology have recently put their innovative skills together to create the "Possum Proof Gates." These gates (installed last Thursday) aim to protect local tracts of native forest by preventing possums from crossing the Waitutu rivers and destroying fauna on the other side.
The gadget is a first of its kind, and it shows that DOC is still looking into alternative methods of possum control.
DOC Ranger, Colin Bishop, said the Southern Institute of Technology has played an integral part in the success of the innovative possum gates.
"They have been there right from the start, giving their utmost throughout the process. Their support and commitment to this project is really appreciated." Said Mr Bishop.
Three of the four Possum Proof Gates were built by SIT students, and overseen by Engineering and Fabrication tutor Andy Young. Mr Young commented on the value for students being involved in real life projects. "The production process exercised a wide range of skills, and in the end, students really enjoy seeing the finished product."
To test the effectiveness of the "Possum Proof Gate", a prototype gate was tested and monitored. DOC used night vision cameras and the footage has revealed that the gate's design achieves its purpose. This confirms a win-win situation for everyone involved (except the possums).
