Metropolitan College History Project Launched

Auckland Metropolitan College History Project Launched

In 2001, Auckland Metropolitan College's doors closed for the last time - at fairly short notice and without much fanfare. There was little discussion of what Metro had done right, in its 24 years as Auckland's "alternative school", but lots of focus on what had been done wrong - most notably the feedback contained in nine negative Education Review Office reports. It often wasn't made clear, however, that Metro was appraised and evaluated by ERO in the same way as any other school, without reference to its special character as a provider of alternative education.

Nine years later, former student Kat Forbes has decided it is time for Metro to be evaluated on its own terms. A website has been launched where former students, teachers and other interested parties can share their recollections of Metro, and the positive impact that the school had on their lives. It is hoped that these stories, in conjunction with interviews and archival research, will culminate in a book which celebrates and records the many successes and accomplishments of Auckland Metropolitan College and its former students and teachers. The book is planned for publication in 2011, in conjunction with a celebration to mark ten years since the school was closed.
