Welcome for Chinese students

Welcome for Chinese students

Thirteen Chinese students will be given a Maori welcome to Whanganui UCOL this Thursday.

The 13 students will spend a year at Whanganui UCOL, studying towards the National Certificate in Hospitality (Professional Cookery) Level 4. They are fresh from a three year Diploma in Chinese Cooking and are coming here to improve their Western cooking skills and techniques.

Whanganui UCOL Principal Julia Pedley says the visit is a direct result of the opening of a UCOL office in Guangzhou in China. “The students’ study visit to New Zealand has had wide cover in Guangzhou media which helps promote UCOL and this city as great places to study.

“The Government is emphasising the value of international students to local economies and is encouraging education providers to take steps to increase their numbers. Our initiatives are in line with that policy.” She says it is hoped that the students will take back positive impressions of the city and of Whanganui UCOL.

The welcome will be held in the Atrium at the Matapihi ki te Ao campus on Thursday 1 July at 11.00 a.m. and will be attended by both students and staff.
A second group of Chinese students from the Guangzhou School of Fine Arts, will arrive in mid July for a week long ‘travel and learn’ experience.
