New fabrication and welding certificate

NorthTec launches new fabrication and welding certificate in semester two

Hands-on types will be well catered for in a Certificate in Fabrication and Welding programme that is being launched at NorthTec’s Future Trades campus in July.

“The programme is 80-90 per cent practical,” said NorthTec tutor Leon Ducrot. “It’s ideal for someone who’s completed the pre-trade course and already has some experience in the industry and is keen to do fabrication and welding.”

Several graduates from NorthTec’s pre-trade mechanical engineering programme have already signed up as have several students from the Youth Guarantee programme at NorthTec.

“There’s a very strong project focus on the 18-week fabrication and welding programme. Students get the opportunity to make their own hot rod which is a great way of learning a variety of job-related skills.”

Student Jared Archer has just done his pre-trade mechanical engineering course at NorthTec and has signed up for fabrication and welding. “I want to better my skills and get more credits towards a full apprenticeship. I find this kind of work really interesting, learning about how suspension components go together and drivelines and their tolerances.”

The chance to build his own hot rod is also a big draw card. “I’m keen to learn those skills so that I can build one at home, but I’d also be keen to set up my own business building hot rods one day.”

Jared speaks highly of tutor Leon Ducrot. “He’s good. He has a no-nonsence approach and everyone knows exactly what’s expected of them.”

Leon is keen to attract more keen, practical students to the programme. “This programme is great for anyone who likes to build things and wants to learn more skills. It’s ideal for someone who wants to be a fabricator or welder or wants to go and do an engineering apprenticeship. Being a fabricator is a very hands-on job and you’ll learn some great practical skills on this course.”

NorthTec is the Tai Tokerau (Northland) region's largest provider of tertiary education, with campuses and learning centres in Whangarei, Kerikeri, Rāwene, Kaikohe and Kaitaia. NorthTec also has over 60 community-based delivery points from Coatesville in rural Rodney to Ngataki in the Far North.
