Visiting artist mentors UCOL Fine Arts students

Far North artist Faith McManus (Ngapuhi, Ngai Takoto) will be at the Quay School of the Arts, Whanganui UCOL this week, as an invited visiting artist.

Faith has a national reputation for her art work, and since graduating from art school 12 years ago has exhibited at leading galleries around New Zealand. An exhibition of her woodcut prints, called The Riders of the Red Manuka, will be opening at Solander Gallery in Wellington on 23 June.

Although The Riders of the Red Manuka are small scale works, Faith is also known for her large-scale prints and for her installations.

Painting lecturer Lorraine Webb says senior Fine Arts students gain from visits by practising artists who may provide a different perspective on their art, complementing the guidance of UCOL’s Fine Arts lecturers.

“From time to time we also bring in gallery owners and exhibition curators who will talk about their priorities and selection processes,” she says.
