UCOL students on the Government’s Youth Guarantee Scheme were awarded their study scholarships at a special ceremony at UCOL recently.
UCOL was allocated 40 places as a selected provider for the new scheme which is aimed at 16 and 17 year olds who have shown potential at secondary school but might not otherwise go on to higher education.
The students get full fee subsidies for qualifications at Levels 1 to 3 (usually certificates) on the National Qualifications Framework. They also get help with literacy and numeracy skills.
UCOL’s Youth Guarantee Coordinator Barbara Manchester-Don says the students are all on vocational programmes which will either lead to employment or further study. They include certificates in Hairdressing, Electrical and Related Trades, Science and Health, Panel and Paint, Automotive, Motorsport and Fashion, Health and Beauty.
“In each case they have a strong personal desire to achieve success in their chosen career paths, and that should be the key to their success,” she says.
The students were presented with their scholarships by Deputy Chief Executive Academic Bonnie Dewart at a ceremony in UCOL’s Learning Hub on Thursday 22 April. Shown accepting her award from Bonnie is Kat McMillan who is studying for the Certificate in Health Science Level 3.
Also present for the Award ceremony were: Alex Colville, Lauren Hood, Roseanne Wenmoth, Chavorn Hakaraia, Rachel Harrison, Renae Glastonbury, Kristie Wackildene, Selena Pettengell, Vanessa Bishop, Jesse Lowndes, Kerryn Nessling, Sarah Dais, Logan Walker, Zac Moorhouse, Josh Lynch, Philip Dykstra, Mitch Rowland, Daniel Fenwick, Nathan Dick, James McKenzie, Brad Colban, Martin Janse van Rensburg.
