Gen-i presents 2009 award for excellence
Gen-i presents 2009 award for excellence to Kerikeri student on NorthTec’s Diploma in ICT
Kerikeri Information and Communication Technology student, Victoria Boxhill, has been presented with $2,000 as the recipient of the 2009 Gen-i Northland Award for Excellence.
Victoria won the award for achieving the top results in her class. She initially enrolled on the Foundation Studies programme at NorthTec’s Kerikeri campus but was encouraged to enrol on the Diploma in Information and Communication Technology. She went on to excel on the programme.
“I only came to NorthTec just to see if I was able to do a course. The staff here at the Kerikeri campus supported me every step of the way. They made sure that I succeeded. Now I’ve embarked on a whole new career path.”
Gen-i Northland Principal, Shane Austin, said that his company’s award is about acknowledging the success of students like Victoria and is a way for the company to give back to the industry. “We see it as a way of giving back to the industry that looks after us. We also believe in encouraging local talent. We find that students from the NorthTec diploma programme go on to further study and we hope that we will be at the forefront of their minds when they are looking for an employer once they complete their studies.”
Victoria is now continuing her studies in the sector with a view to doing a degree in computer science. “My studies so far have been really enjoyable and I hope to combine my interest in computers and finance in my future career. Winning the award from Gen-i is a great boost.”
NorthTec is the Tai Tokerau (Northland) region's largest provider of tertiary education, with campuses and learning centres in Whangarei, Kerikeri, Rāwene, Dargaville, Kaikohe and Kaitaia. NorthTec also has over 60 community-based delivery points from Coatesville in rural Rodney to Ngataki in the Far North.
