Open Polytechnic opens new degree for enrolment

The Open Polytechnic has opened provisional enrolments for its new nationwide early childhood education teaching degree.

The Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) is currently pending accreditation and approval from the Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics Quality (ITPQ) and the New Zealand Teachers Council. Subject to this approval the Open Polytechnic is seeking provisional applications from prospective students to enrol in the programme.

Applications for provisional enrolment close on 14 May 2010.

Taught by distance education, the Open Polytechnic’s Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) will enable staff working in early childhood education services the opportunity to gain a graduate qualification without having to leave work to attend classes.

It will also prepare those wishing to enter the early childhood education sector with the skills they need to succeed in a profession which has a shortage of qualified teaching staff.

“There is sector demand for an early childhood education degree offered by flexible distance delivery so that learners in all areas of New Zealand have the opportunity to gain a higher level qualification,” says Dr Raymond Young, Dean of the Open Polytechnic’s School of Information and Social Sciences which administers the degree.

Open Polytechnic students currently enrolled in the Polytechnic’s popular Diploma of Teaching (ECE) may choose to apply to transition to the degree.
