Te Tai Tokerau students get a taste of tertiary
Media release: Te Tai Tokerau students get a taste of
tertiary study options
More than 130 students from around the region attended two Te Tai Tokerau Tertiary Experience days at NorthTec this week.
Students had the opportunity to explore study options in a range of areas at NorthTec’s campuses in Whangarei with presentations on sport, trades, hair and beauty, hospitality, arts and fashion.
Career Services provided advice and information to the students on their future options and Whau Valley Scholl principal Robert Clarke was a guest speaker on both days.
Marketing Coordinator for NorthTec Gwen Edge said that the days provided an introduction to what’s on offer at NorthTec specifically designed for the region’s Māori students.
“It is very important to us that Māori students know that there are great options for them here at NorthTec and that they can achieve here. We were delighted with the response from the students and look forward to welcoming many of them here as NorthTec students in the future.”
NorthTec Kaitakawaenga Houpeke Piripi addressed the students on the second of the two experience days and shared the words of a kuia who said that Māori students need to realise that there are two moana available for them to fish from – the Māori moana and the Pākeha moana and it is important to take the good kai from both moana. He urged the students to make good choices and to grasp the positive opportunities available to them.
A Kaitaia College student spoke on behalf of the students in response and said that they recognised their responsibility as future rangatira to listen to what had been shared with them at NorthTec and to pass that knowledge on to future generations.
