Scholarship Results In The Post
NZ Scholarship examination results for nearly 9000 students have been posted today (8 February) and will be delivered
from tomorrow. Scholarship students will also be able to log-in and check their results on the NZQA website tomorrow
afternoon (9 February) at: www.nzqa.govt.nz
For 2009, 8986 students participated in NZ Scholarship exams, 2065 students will receive a total of more than $3.4
million over the next three years, ranging from a one-off payment of $500 (for single subject exam pass) to $30,000, to
be paid over three years, for a Premier Award (as long as candidates maintain at least a 'B' grade average in tertiary
study in New Zealand).
For 2009, eight students will receive the Premier Award. This year 14 students met the minimum requirements to be
eligible for consideration for a Premier Award, which is restricted to the very top 5-10 students in the country. The
eight recipients gained at least four Scholarships at Outstanding level, OR a total of five Scholarships, with three at
Outstanding level, with at least two top-three rankings in the country in individual subjects.
The remaining six candidates are among 49 candidates who will receive the Outstanding Scholar Award, worth $5000 per
year for three years (as long as candidates maintain at least a 'B' grade average in tertiary study in New Zealand).
These Outstanding Scholars gained at least three Scholarships, including at least two at Outstanding level, or one
Scholarship at Outstanding level and four other Scholarships.
Details of individual Premier and Top Subject Award winners will be available on Thursday, 11 February. These students
will take part in the Top Scholar Awards in May.
English was the most popular Scholarship subject, with 1696 entries and 330 achieving Scholarship, and 52 achieving
Scholarship at “Outstanding” level.
This year there are six new Scholarship subjects. Agricultural and Horticultural Science is a new Scholarship subject,
and Visual Arts has now been replaced and divided into five separate subjects: Design, Painting, Print Making,
Photography and Sculpture.
The Scholarship process is overseen by an independent advisory group, the Technical Overview Group Assessment. Group
chair Professor Gary Hawke said: “The Scholarship process is extremely robust, and the Group was again, this year, very
impressed with the truly outstanding performances of the Premier Award winners. "It is clear that Scholarship continues
to have a positive effect in driving motivation for students across all subjects."
Marked Scholarship examination papers will be posted out to students from tomorrow (9 February).
Monetary Awards for 2009: Premier Award - 8 Outstanding Scholar Award - 49 Scholarship Award (3 or more Scholarships) -
180 Single Subject - 1,784 Top Subject – 16 (There are 33 Top Subject Scholars but 17 receive awards in other
categories. In most circumstances, candidates receive only the highest monetary award for which they are eligible.)
