UCOL Students Raise Funds for Samoa

Whanganui UCOL’s First Year Bachelor of Nursing students have once again taken up the challenge to fundraise for the victims of the Tsunami in Samoa.

Following on from the successful Australian Bush Fire Appeal in February this year, the students held a raffle for the Samoan Tsunami Appeal. On top of their very demanding study regime and family commitments the students sought sponsorship from local businesses who generously donated the prizes. Students raised over $1000 from the raffle. This money will be forwarded to the Wanganui District Council Tsunami Appeal collection.

UCOL staff and students also contributed by holding novelty days and donating useful items that could be sent directly to those affected in Samoa. UCOL staff were asked to contribute items such as clothing, bedding and toys for the kids. Petrina Clark, Business Administrator, said, “The response was overwhelming, not only from staff but also the community who caught wind of what UCOL wanted to do. While many organisations were requesting financial help rather than donated items, our contributions were added to a container that PTE Y2Y was sending to help Samoan victims. I am extremely proud of our students and staff here at UCOL. Like other organisations in Whanganui, our community has a big heart and it’s a great feeling when we take action together” says Petrina.

On behalf of the Nursing students we would like to thank the sponsors:

The Wanganui Chronicle, Wanganui Play Centre Association, Anndion Lodge, Pak n Save, Double S Motordrome, Meteor Printers Ltd & Stonez Restaurant.

A special mention is needed to acknowledge Elizabeth Hackett and the First Year Bachelor of Nursing students for their continued empathy and compassion for others dealing with hardship and disaster. These students will make excellent nurses and we feel privileged to have them studying at UCOL.
