Fine furniture and images show at Te Manawa

Fine furniture and visual images by UCOL staff and students is on show now at Te Manawa.

It is the first time that work produced by students and staff from these two iconic UCOL programmes has been exhibited together.

The joint graduate exhibition of work by students and staff of the Bachelor of Applied Visual Imaging (BAVI) and the Diploma in Furniture Design and Making opened at Te Manawa on Friday night.

The exhibition will continue until 13 December.

Chris Hubbard, Head of School of Photography and Design at UCOL, says: “The graduate students have worked well together and have produced an exciting variety of creative work.”

The BAVI students are exhibiting works in photography, graphic design, web design, animation and video.

Danny Reilly, lecturer in Furniture Design and Making says their graduating students have done themselves proud. “There is so much good work coming out of our workshop. There will be some exceptional furniture on display.”

At Friday’s opening, UCOL Deputy Chief Executive – Academic, Bonnie Dewart, said UCOL was very proud of its Visual Arts and Furniture Design and Making programmes.

“We have every reason to be. Each in their own way is unique in New Zealand – the Furniture Design and Making programme is the only one in New Zealand and one of only three in Australasia. Visual Arts – with its breadth of study covering Photography, Design, Web Design, Animation and Video work – is also unmatched.”

Bonnie also noted the string of national awards won by students and staff of the programmes, including at the National Woodskills Festival at Kawerau and the Epson/NZIP Iris Professional Photography Awards at which UCOL was named tertiary institute of the year for the fifth year in a row.
